Area and Location: |
Yemen is in the regoin of the Southern Peninsula and in 1000BC it was ruled by three successive civilizations being Minean, Sabaean and Himyarit. Its unique culture is still evident today in the architecture of its cities, towns and villages. |

The country gained independence from the Turks in 1918 and Imam Yahya became the country's King, although Yemen's independence was recognised by Britain in 1925. Imam Yahya's rule came to an end in 1948 and he was succeeded by his son, Ahmed, who continued his reign until 1962. Mohamed Al Badr took over for a very short period of time until the revolution on 26th September 1962 by Colonel Abdullah Al Sallal who proclaimed the country as Yemen Arab Republic. It was continued until 1979 when the President Ali Abdullah Saleh governed Yemen.
